Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, Midway, and Iwo Jima-
Okinawa is part of Japan and is the largest island in the Ryukyu Islands chain. Iwo Jima, also known as Iwo To, is also a part of Japan, specifically within the Tokyo Metropolis. Both islands are under Japanese sovereignty, although Iwo Jima holds historical significance due to its role in World War II.
Based on the equally famous World War II photograph taken soon after the actual incident, the famous 'Iwo Jima statue' represents the capturing of Mt. Suribachi -- the highest point on the island of Iwo Jima -- by American Marines. More largely, the statue is dedicated to all those Marines who have died in defense of their country since 1775.
Iwo Jima was an improper pronunciation which became common during World War II. The Japanese government changed the name back to its pre-war pronunciation on June 18, 2007. The mispronunciation came about due to a change in Japanese orthography in 1946.
