Unable to leave the ship and unable to do anything Key watched the bombarding of the American forces at Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore on the night of September 13-September 14, 1814. On his way back to his home in Baltimore Key was inspired by the previous nights battle and penned a poem what is now known as the Star-Spangled-Banner or the United States national anthem.
