The majority of SS officers fought in the Waffen-SS. Others, however, were in the Totenkopfverbaende and ran the concentration camps and death camps. Many Waffen-SS units comitted appalling atrocities.

∙ 6y agoThe collective units of the SS were groups designed to be loyal to Adolf Hitler, it was divided into various groups and units. The Waffen SS, the most well-known aspect of the aspect was the elite military organization of the SS, the Einsatzgruppen were mobile constant moving Death Squads sent out to kill Jews, Slavs, Gypsies and other undesirables, the Gestapo which was assimilated into the SS before the war acted as the Secret Police in the country. The Totenkopfverbande were the SS units known as the 'Death Head' units which were the ones in command of the Concentration Camps and all of the acts committed in it.

The actual killings were carried out mainly by the SS and the mobile killing units, assisted by local volunteers from some of the Nazi-occupied areas of what was then the Soviet Union. Romania and Croatia carried out their own national holocausts.
