During the American Civil War, the stalemate that occurred at the end of 1862 resulted from the variety of ineffective battles and campaigns conducted by both sides of the conflict. In the East, various Confederate victories achieved the same thing. 1863 was seen by both sides as the year in which something decisive would need to be achieved.
