The two most important weapon systems to come out of WWI was the Tank and the modern concept of aerial warfare.

Although air combat was considered before the war. It was not until the development of technologies during the war that it came into it's own. Prior to WWI most of the military powers saw aeroplanes as a way of observing the enemy. The concept of close air support, strategic bombing, the dedicated bomber, the dedicated fighter, aircraft carriers all were developed during WWI.

The first use of tanks the D1 or Mark I was by the British in the Battle of Flers-Courcellette on September 15th, 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. They are called Tanks because the term "tank" was considered innocuous so any spies would not get suspicious when they were shipped to France.
