Leading up to the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, tensions were escalating in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. Union forces, under General Ulysses S. Grant, were advancing into Tennessee, aiming to capture key Confederate strongholds. The Confederate Army, commanded by General Albert Sidney Johnston, sought to launch a surprise attack to halt Union advances and regain control over the region. This culminated in the fierce battle near Shiloh Church, where both sides experienced significant casualties and strategic consequences.
