The ancient Roman soldier had to first of all be obedient. He had to learn to follow orders. Period. He also had to have the stamina to carry out his various assignments, many times without sleep. He had to learn to march and fight in unison with his fellows. He had to be meticulous in cleaning his armor and weapons in order to prevent rust and had to learn to do his laundry and cooking when on the march. But most important of all, he had to be loyal to his military oath.
