They were doomed to lose a Civil War against the Northern states with its much bigger population and advanced manufacturing capacity.

They could have continued to practice slavery without a war, as the newly-elected Lincoln was not demanding abolition, only a ban on new slave-states.

There happened to be a glut of cotton on the world markets that year, so the Confederacy would not have been able to buy many weapons, even if the Northern blockade had not been successful.

The north also had a better communication.
