Actually, Nazi Germany officially lost the war when they signed the ally's unconditional surrender document on May 8, 1945. Japan surrendered a few months later (August 15, 1945) after the atomic bombs were dropped, and the war was over.

The Axis powers and Nazi Germany in particular, had a poor chance of winning from the start, while they almost leveled the field in their early blitzkrieg the sheer production and number of the allies had them outmatched.

Through brave soldiers and superior tactics Germany was holding out against the wave.

When they tried to blitzkrieg and were forced back from Moscow, the tables really turned against them, having failed to win the war quick against Russia they now had a large nation on their hands. On top of this they had taken very few prisoners from Russia and so Russia began a no quarter policy against Germany. Attacking Russia in the winter ment many of the German forces suffered heavily before entering the battles. When Germany invaded Russia it opened up another front that they had expected to close. This left their Eastern front open to mass invasion by forces who had until this time been sitting on the fence. Having their blitzkrieg defeated it became a war of attrition, and despite better trained and equiped troops they could not afford to pay for supplies and replacements. Thus by mid 1942 forces were spread very thin. So while they were fighting against great odds to begin with, by mid 1942 things had really taken a turn for the worst.

To say the Germans "gave up" in the Second World War is demeaning. The Germans were being attacked on numerous fronts, and their Axis allies (Italy, etc.) had surrendered to the Allies as the war dragged on. German forces surrendered in Italy on April 29, 1945 and in Western Europe on May 7, 1945. However, fighting continued on the Eastern Front until the Germans surrendered specifically to the Soviets on May 8, which is recognized as V-E Day, or "Victory in Europe Day". In Prague, resistance of remnants of German Army continued until May 11, 1945.
