Fort Nisqually (a Hudson's Bay Company trading post in Western Washington) began as one small storage building in 1832, and opened as a finished fort in 1833. "Fort" is sort of a misleading term, since it was really a nonmilitary trading post, but it had bastions and palisades for protection, just in case. The fort was moved slightly in 1843 to be closer to a source of drinking water. It continued in operation until 1869. The two surviving original buildings were moved from the original site near the town of DuPont to Tacoma's Point Defiance Park in the 1930s, and the remainder of the fort was reconstructed across a number of years. It now closely resembles its appearance around the year 1855, and is open to the public.
Fort Nisqually was built in 1833 by the Hudson's Bay Company as a trading post to facilitate the fur trade in the Puget Sound region of present-day Washington State. Its location along the Nisqually River allowed for easy access to both maritime and overland trade routes. The fort served as a key supply center and a point of contact between European settlers and local Indigenous tribes. Over time, it became an important hub for agriculture and trade in the area.

Both Fort Vancouver and Fort Nisqually were part of the Hudson's Bay Company. The Hudson's Bay Company was a business enterprise, so neither of them were military forts, although there was later a U. S. Military fort called Fort Vancouver as well. Fort Nisqually later (about 1839) came under the jurisdiction of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company, a company created by the Hudson's Bay Company to carry out farming and ranching enterprises, while the HBC continued as a fur trading concern.
