The 55th Infantry was one of the four infantry regiments in the 7th Infantry Division during WWI. The low numbered divisions, such as the 7th, were called "Regular Army" divisions, though in truth there were not too many prewar regular soldiers in them. The ranks were full of wartime volunteers and draftees. Compared to some of the other US WWI divisions, the 7th did not see a lot of heavy action, and had the somewhat derisive nickname "The Sightseeing Seventh". The 7th Division went overseas in December 1917, after being formed at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. Most of the division sailed to France aboard the SS Leviathan. The 7th Division participated in no campaigns as a division, spent only 33 days on the front line, and had only 1,709 casualties for the entire war, 204 killed and 1505 wounded in action. The Division came under shellfire for the first time on October 11, 1918, and later, near St. Mihiel, came under gas attack. The division was assigned to the newly activated US 2nd Army in early November 1918, and was preparing for an all-out assault on the Hindenburg Line when hostilities ceased. Most of the divisions combat service was in the area south of Verdun, in eastern France.

he 28th Division traces its history from the briefly active 7th Division, formed in May 1917. In July 1917 or later, the division was renamed the 28th Division. It was activated in September 1917. Its initial organization included the 55th Infantry Brigade (109th and 110th Infantry Regiments) and the 56th Infantry Brigade (111th and 112th Infantry Regiments). During World War I it was involved in the Meuse-Argonne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne, and Ypres-Lys operations. During the war it took a total of 14,139 casualties. An honor battalion of Pennsylvania National Guardsmen of the "Iron Division" (These are not soldiers, these are iron men. Gen. Pershing) dedicated the Pennsylvania World War Memorial in Argonne, France, in 1928.
Because in 1914-18 there were no special forces or commandoes. There were in basic terms units who showed offensive spirit, and battalions which did not. 55th Brigade was one of the former, and it was not Australian, nor Regular, but made up of Kitchener volunteers. Therefore it was both symbolically and militarily valuable, and it was frequently sent in to the attack.
The 55th prime number is 257.
