Wounded men were taken care of by medics (called corpsman in the Marines). When a man was hit, medics from within the unit (company or battalion) dressed him up. The medic went to him, or the wounded man was dragged or carried to the medic. When in the field, the wounded GI was trucked or flown into the nearest firebase, where it was safe to land and a medic could be found living in a bunker (within the firebase).
Badly wounded men were flown directly to main bases (large combat bases such as Camp Evans, or Camp Eagle, or Quang Tri, etc. etc.); or later airlifted to them from the firebases, after initial treatment from the medics. Those large bases had "Aid Stations", little wooden buildings surrounded by sandbags. They had a chopper pad just outside their entrances, and further transporting of wounded men could be taken care of from that point.
