The northern states began working to end slavery, but the southern states needed slaves because they thought their economy would suffer without them.

The election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln was elected president. The south believed that he was going to abolish slavery. The south then began seceding from the union.
Abraham Lincolns main goal at first was to keep the states together. But later slavery was included but no by choice. It just mixed in and was part of it till the end
