Bombs were dropped by the German Air Force throughout Britain in WWII, but mostly in the industrial conurbations and the south and east of England. Small port towns and remote airfields suffered bombing, but the most comprehensive bombing occured in London and the industrial city of Coventry.

Cities were bombed during World War 2 to destroy war manufacturing places, military strongholds, transportation centers and gasoline tank farms. Another reason to bomb cities is to motivate the general populous to tell their government to end the war. Some rural locations were bombed that would affect the cities and the enemies war making capacity such as dams, railroads, airports and training centers.
