Yankee politicians and Republicans were called "carpetbaggers", for the soft fabric luggage that was then in style. Southerners who collaborated were called "scalawags".
Scalawags were southerners who helped during Reconstruction and carpetbaggers were northerners who went south to help with Reconstruction. a helpful hint to remember which is which is to remember that scalawags and southerners both start with 's'.
Scalawags - a derogatory term (originally describing worthless livestock) applied to native white Southerners who supported the federal reconstruction plan and cooperated with the blacks in order to achieve their ends. Some of the scalawags were entirely above board, having opposed the Confederacy in earlier times and later wanted a new South to emerge from the rubble. Others cooperated with or served in the Republican governments in order to avail themselves of money-making opportunities.

The federal actions during the reconstruction era affected Southerners in the sense that all men were to be considered equal, and blacks were to be treated as equals before the law.
The Republican scandal during reconstruction included the punishment of Southerners with many unfair tactics instead of rebuilding. Many landowners lost their plantations to taxes that were levied at a whim. These injustices were attributed to the Republicans who held office at the time.
