The Grumman F6F Hellcat, with 5271 credited victories, mostly operating from US Navy carriers in the Pacific. The aircraft also was operated by the US Marine Corps, and by the Fleet Air Arm of Britain's Royal Navy. Fifty-two kills of the above total were by Royal Navy Pilots, and eight were by US pilots in the invasion of southern France.
The P-51 Mustang was second.
The deadliest fighter of the war was the German Bf-109 (or ME-109 in older writings), which is not surprising given that almost 34,000 were produced and it was in service in one variant or another throughout the war. The Spanish Air Force continued to operate this fighter into the late 1960s.
the British hawker hurricane, it shot down the most planes then any others in ww2. The p51 which was only good at long range and was used late in the war to escort US bombers

My father said he and a couple other guys shot the last plane down in Europe. He said it was 3 days after the war was over and a German plane didn't have it's landing gear down when it flew over. To show the war was over all planes would have to fly with their landing gear down. They shot some warning shots and it came back at them and they shot it down. He said it was in the Army paper "Stars and Stipes". I have been trying to find this article or paper to verify and get the story correct for my father passed away a few years ago and he told the story when we were young. If anyone can find the paper I would love to see and read it or obtain acopy of it. The Last aircraft shot down in WW2 was a Convair B-32 Dominator, shot down in 17th August, two days after the surrender, a group of A6M zeros and Shiden-kais attacked a formation of 2 B-32s on a reconnissence mission, during which one B-32 was critically damaged and made a forced crash-landing in the sea, in this attack participated two japanese Aces including the famous war-hero, Saburo-Sakai. this would be the last confirmed aircraft shot down in WW2.
On a US Navy warship it's the enemy's flag with a corresponding drawing of what was destroyed: During WW2; An enemy flag with a small airplane it they shot down a plane, or small warship painted along side the flag if they sank a warship. On a US Aircraft, during WW2 an enemy flag, sometimes with the written designation of what was shot down: During the Vietnam War; a RED STAR with MIG-21 written next to the star. Even though the North Vietnamese Air Force MIG's had YELLOW stars on their wings, for US pilots, all communists were RED's, therefore all communist aircraft shot down in Vietnam were designated by RED Stars. The US Air Force and the US Navy each have preserved in museums an F-4 Phantom II with 5 Red Stars painted on each one from the Vietnam War; the last US Ace's of the 20th Century.

If you mean in WW2 most likely. That was his job as a pilot. He was shot down over Germany.
There were thousands of airmen of both sides shot down in Europe in WW2.
The answer is currently unknown.
On 16th October 1939, three Spitfires from 603 Sqn RAF shot down a German recconaisance aircraft over Rosyth Royal Navy base in Scotland. This was the first air combat in WW2
No, there are not. However during WW2 there were BMW aircraft engines .
The P-51 was one of the most successful fighter aircraft of WW2.
You have named 3 countries that produced vast numbers and types of aircraft. Let's give 1 example for each. -Britain's most famous aircraft was possibly the Spitfire, used in WW2. Germany's was the Messerschmitt 109, also from WW2. I believe France's most used and best aircraft was the 1960's Mirage jet fighter.

WW2 was the last "drama" envolving warship to warship gunnery duels. Aircraft to Aircraft; Tank to Tank; Man to Man...have all been repeated since WW2.
