The first French nuclear test was Gerboise Bleu on February 13, 1960 at 06:04 Greenwich Mean Time. The test was conducted near Reganne in the Algerian Sahara desert in Africa. It was a tower shot from a 105-meter tower. The test device was a single-point implosion-type plutonium device and had a yield of between 60 and 70 kilotons (as predicted). It was the largest first test by the nuclear powers of the time.
India conducted its first nuclear weapons test, codenamed "Smiling Buddha," on May 18, 1974. This made India the first country outside of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council to possess nuclear weapons.
