Korea was divided between the U.S. and the Soviet Union
In 1950, the conflict on the Korean peninsula began when the North Korean army invaded South Korea, crossing the 38th parallel on June 25. This surprise attack aimed to unify Korea under communist control, leading to the outbreak of the Korean War. In response, the United Nations, primarily led by the United States, intervened to support South Korea.
Japan occupied the Korean peninsula from 1910 until the end of World War II in 1945. Following Japan's defeat in the war, Korea was divided into two zones of occupation, with the Soviet Union administering the north and the United States administering the south. This division eventually led to the establishment of two separate governments and the Korean War.
The spread of communism wasn't checked; the communists won. The war was un-winnable because the battlefield (South Vietnam itself) couldn't be isolated. Korea had been a peninsula and was easily isolated because the USN controlled the seas. Vietnam was not a peninsula. The war either had to be expanded into Cambodia and Laos, and risk war with the USSR or Red China (as had occurred in Korea) or abandon the war altogether. The US chose the latter.
