The total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I was over 37 million. There were over 16 million deaths and 20 million wounded ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history. Since the number was so high and it was a World war there is no record of the first causality.

Who shot down 40 Japanese planes in ww1?

I've checked and rechecked my books on WW1 pilots and can find no Central power pilot who shot down 1 Japanese plane, let alone 40. Evidently during WW1 the Germans had only 1 airplane posted in Asia, so no pilot shot down 40 Japanese during the war.
