Before the Civil War Montgomery Alabama was considered the capital of the south. When Virginia entered the confederacy during the Civil War, the capital of the South was moved to Richmond Virginia.
The advantages that the Confederates had in the Civil War were (1) the Confederate troops had the motivation of defending their homes and families, (2) the Confederates had prepared for war by accumulating a small store of supplies, and (3) the Confederates had better military leaders.
