The leader of the German forces in World War One was the Kaiser, also known as emperor, Wilhelm II. However, the Germans had many other military commanders during the war, Paul von Hindenburg served as a Field Marshall, eventually being promoted the the Chief General of Staff halfway through the war. Another notable commander was Hinderburg's deputy commander, Erich Ludendorff, who was also promoted halfway through the war to the rank of Generalquartermaster, a rank effectively equivalent to that of Hindenburg's.

He was a Nazi, but far from the worst of them. Usually to get to be a general an officer has to successfully complete army schools, such as the Command and General Staff College in the US Army. The Germans actually were the first army to have this type of professional education, with their Kriegsakademie. Officers are picked to go to these schools, based on the evaluations of their commanders. You can't just apply and get in. Almost every German general of WWII had been to these schools, but not Rommel. His commanders did not think he had the potential. Rommel was an obscure colonel commanding Hitler's bodyguard when the Fuhrer promoted him to general for his loyalty. In 1944 Rommel was approached by the anti-Hitler plotters among the German officer corps, who tried to kill Hitler on July 20. Rommel rebuffed the plotters. But he did not report them, and for this, the Gestapo forced him to commit suicide, by threatening his family.

Marshall Plan, named after U.S. Army General George Marshall. Marshall was the only ranking general officer ever to have won a Nobel Peace Prize. It should be noted several U.S. Presidents- Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, most recently President Obama ( mainly for Nuclear disarmament work) have won this award.

At first, the Germans and General Rommel were under the command of the Italian Commando Supremo. It wasn't until Hitler promoted Rommel to Field Marshal was he the highest ranking general officer in Italy.
