It would depend on which 'army' you are referring to. Generally, a Field Marshall is the highest rank in an army.
general of the Army
In most military's, an army colonel is several grades higher than captain. In the United States Army, for example, a captain is an O-3 while a colonel is an O-6. That is switched, so to speak, for most navies. A captain is the highest rank just under admiral. Note, though, that navies don't have a colonel rank.
The lowest rank in the army is typically referred to as "private." In the U.S. Army, for example, the entry-level rank is Private (E-1), which is designated as "Private" without any additional insignia. This rank is often assigned to new recruits who have just completed basic training.
Sergeant is a higher rank than Corporal.
Higher rank? If you are talking about the SOCOM Tier system, Army SF is a Tier-2 asset while 75th Rangers are Tier-3.

This is filed under US ARmy and US Navy, so let me clarify.. A Captain in the Army is pay grade O3, whereas a Colonel in the Army is pay grade O6. Colonel is the higher of the two. The Navy has a different rank structure for officers than the other branches. A Captain in the Navy is 06 - equivalent to Colonel. The rank of Colonel does not exist in the Navy.
Second Lieutenant is the higher rank
Sergeant Major of the Army is the highest rank NCO.

Anyone in the US Army can lose their rank - in the late 1990s, the Sergeant Major of the Army was demoted. It's not as easy for an SFC to lose their rank as, say, a Specialist or Sergeant, but it can happen.
In the US Army, General.
