Trench warfare was not invented. It happened. Trenches have been dug in warfare from the Trojan War onward, but trench warfare was a result of new weapons and old tactics. Defense became stronger than offense. The warplane was not sufficiently advanced to break this stalemate, and the tank was not properly used. Plan 1919 of the British General JC Fuller was designed to overcome these deficiencies, but Germany ran out of steam in 1918 before it could be implemented. Yet, after the surrender Germany was quicker to adopt the principles of mobile warfare, and they were used to great effect in the first half of the next war.

I'd like to fix this answer. It WAS actually invented by Maori warriors of New Zealand during the New Zealand wars in the 19th century. That's how the British got a hold of it as they were fighting against the Maori for control of NZ.
