Karl Doenitz took over Hitler after he committed suicide on the 30th of April 1945.

Karl Doenitz however was trialled for being part of the Nazi movement and was convected of war crimes from 1946 to 1956.

He was in charge of Germany until the 7th of May 1945 when he ordered the unconditional surrender of Germany along with a new cabinet that had been formed.

ANSWER Following Adolf Hitler's suicide on April 30, 1945, his last will and testament appointed Grand Admiral Karl Donitz as successor to the positions of Head of State and Supreme Commander of the Armend Forces. The message was delivered to a Donitz in complete dissbelief (as the natural successors of Hitler would have been either Goering of Himmler) by one of the testament's witnesses, Martin Borman. So Karl Donitz become President of the Reich (he choose to be President and not Fuhrer) as of April 30, 1945, created a provisional governmant and directed all his efforts towards securing the surrender of as many German troops as possible to the Americans or British , as far away as they could from the Russians.

That depends on exactly what you mean. Hitler held two positions: Reichskanzler (chancellor), or head of government, and Führer (leader). or head of state.

The Reichskanzler position technically went to Joseph Goebbels for a few hours after Hitler's death (Goebbels, like Hitler, committed suicide rather than allow himself to be captured).

Hitler's successor as head of state was Karl Dönitz, who was given the title Reichspräsident (president). Dönitz appointed Johann Ludwig Schwerin von Krosigk (the former Finance Minister) head of government, though Schwerin von Krosigk declined the Reichskanzler title. Both of them lasted approximately 3 weeks in those positions, at which point the German government temporarily effectively ceased to exist during the Allied occupation of Germany.

Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz was his immediate successor, though about the only thing of any real significance that he did as "ruler" was surrender. He was tried at the Nuremberg Trials and spent ten years in prison (not for anything specific that he did as ruler... mostly for his actions during the war; he had been Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy).

Germany went about 4 years without a real head of state, being effectively a puppet of the Allied Powers in the interim. The first president of the Federal Republic of Germany was Theodor Heuss, elected in 1949.
