In the bombing on Himmel Street, only a few characters survive. Max Vandenburg, who is hiding in the basement of the Hubermann home, survives the attack. Liesel Meminger, who is outside at the time, also survives the bombing, but her adoptive parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, are killed in the explosion.
There is no place called Molching in Germany. The Molching of Markus Zusak's The Book Thief is based on the real city of Olching, and "Himmel Street" is a reference to the so-called Himmelstrasse in the Sobibor extermination camp, which was the nickname for the 100-meter road that led to the extermination chambers.

Max was seen by Liesel when he was marching down Himmel Street in a group of other Jews that were being marched into a local concentration camp. Max is assumed dead considering he entered a concentration camp. Himmel Street is later bombed, Liesel being the only survivor. Max was not on Himmel Street at the time, though, so he did not die. In a later chapter it is seen that Max and Liesel finally reunite, most probably after the war ended and the Jews were released from the camps. His death is not mentioned in the book, but one can infer that he probably died of a natural cause much later.
