Reichsmarshall Hermann Göring was Hitler's designated successor until April 23 1945. On this date Göring sent Hitler a telegram stating that he (Göring) would declare himself the Führer's successor with all powers if he did not receive confirmation by 10pm that day that Hitler had left Berlin. Interpreting this as an attempted coup, Hitler stripped Göring of all his offices and his rank and ordered his arrest for high treason. Hitler then designated Fleet Admiral Karl Dönitz as his successor.
