Edward II was passionately obsessed with his friend Piers Gaveston. Gaveston monopolized the kings attention and became his favorite. The king lavished gifts and titles on him which enraged the barons. He also neglected his queen Isabel for Gaveston, and moved away from his kingly responsibilities. When the barons rose up in arms and kidnapped and murdered Gaveston, the king chose as his favorites Spensers-father and son, who became the rulers of England, controlling the weak king entirely 'till they were killed in a battle between the king and his wife Isabel who had attacked England with French help to depose the king.
