The Chiefs of the German General Staff in WW1 were: *Helmuth Molkte, Junior - till the German defeat in the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914. *Erich von Falkehayn from 1914-16 *Paul von Hindenburg from 1916-18 It's worth also noting Erich Ludendorff, who was Deputy Chief of the General Staff under Hindenburg, 1916-18. He was enormously influential in German politics at the time. It was Ludendorff who, after his 'nineteenth nervous breakdown', told the German High Command at the end of September 1918 that the game was up and that they'd have to ask for peace! Two days later he informed another meeting of senior officers of his plan to make civilian politicians sign the armistice and the harsh peace treaty that was bound to follow. Fearing prosecution as a war criminal, Ludendorff them fled to Sweden. In the early he returned to Germany and became an ardent Nazi and took part in the nototious Beer Hall putsch of November 1923. There seems little doubt that being in the dock beside a Field Marshal greatly helped Corporal Hitler. In 1928 relations between the two cooled somewhat. Joncey
