The French were the first to assign the Ace designation. Adolphe Pégoudwas the first Ace. He shot down 5 enemy aircraft in 1915. He was also the first Ace to be shot down and killed. Before the war, Pègoud was a flying instructor. In an odd twist of fate, he was shot down and killed by one of his pre-war pupils Unteroffizier Kandulski on 31 Aug 1915.
