The Marines are integrally a part of the NAVY. The major war leaders in the Pacific theatre- the Navy used the term CINCPAC ( Commander In Chief- Pacific) were William (Bull) Halsey, Raymond P. Spruance, Ernest J. King, all Admirals who held the CINCPAC post at one time ( pronounced Sink-Pack). One of the more popular and somewhat unorthodox USMC officers was Lt.Colonel Carlson, who commanded- in a very individual fashion, Carlson"s Raiders which were heavily armed with automatic weapons, had unusual tactical doctrine, and did remarkably well in the Leathernecks" battle quests of the Pacific. Carlson also popularized the slogan (Gung Ho!) roughly Pull energetically! Pull together. it has nothing to do with Guns and is not rendered Gun-Ho as some newmen get it wrong.
