Major General John F. Reynolds had worked his way up the military ladder leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg. Reynolds took part in many major battles in the Eastern Theater. On the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863, the general was directing troop movements when he was mortally wounded.
At dawn on July 1, 1863 the early troop movements saw Confederate General Heth' division marching towards the town of Gettysburg. Badly needed supplies were needed and Heth believed the road he was taking would not be highly defended. Instead he ran into 3,000 mounted Union infantry. This forced Heth's retreat. During the battle, however, Union General John Reynolds was killed. He was the first general to be killed at Gettysburg.
