McDowell's subordinates included division commanders Daniel Tyler, Samuel Heintzelman, and David Hunter. A number of brigadiers who commanded brigades in these divisions later rose to high rank, including Sherman and Burnside. Pope's subordinates a year later included corps commanders Franz Sigel, FitzJohn Porter, and (the same) Irvin McDowell.
