The American invasion of Guadalcanal occurred on August 7, 1942, and it was the first American offensive operation of World War II. They captured the airfield (Henderson Field) and, after six months of some of the most ferocious battles of the Pacific War, pushed the Japanese off the island. Capturing the island allowed the Americans to use it as the launching point for the South Pacific campaigns to follow. Many historic naval battles were fought in the surrounding waters. They were the Battle of Savo Island, the Battle of Cape Esperance, Battle of Tassafaronga, Battle of the Eastern Solomons, Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, the two nights of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, and the Battle of the Rennell Islands.

The US, but it was no cake walk. It was fought from 7 August 1942 until 9 February 1943 at a cost of 7,100 men killed in action for the United States plus the loss of 29 ships and 615 aircraft. The Japanese lost 31,000 killed and 1,000 captured plus they lost 38 ships and between 683 and 880 aircraft.

A six month long struggle in '42 consisting primarily of a series of naval battles...the most savage sea battles in history. More US sailors died fighting in those naval battles than US Marines on the actual island of Guadalcanal.

There were two "theaters" of operations in the Pacific - the Central Pacific and the Southwest Pacific Theaters of Operations. The latter was created mainly to provide a command for Douglas MacArthur, after his escape from the Philippines, because an officer of his prestige had to have a lofty posting. Had it been anyone but MacArthur in this equation, such an anomalous situation would not have been created. The commander of the Central Pacific Theater was Admiral Chester Nimitz, who was also the Commander of the US Navy's Pacific Fleet, based in Honolulu. MacArthur was working out of Australia. As the boundary was initially drawn between these two theaters Guadalcanal would have been in MacArthur's area. So, the boundary was redrawn, to include the Solomon Islands in the Central Pacific, under Nimitz, because it was Marines who were to make the initial landings on Guadalcanal. The US Marine Corps is a part of the US Navy. The commander of the forces on the scene, reporting back to Nimitz, was Admiral Robert Ghormley. Ghormley's amphibious forces were under Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner. The commander of the landing force, and in charge ashore once the troops were landed, was Marine General Alexander A. Vandergrift. Vandergrift was commander of the 1st Marine Division, two-thirds of which was with him on Guadalcanal. There was also a regiment from the 2nd Marine Division. Vandergrift went on to become Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1944, and was awarded a Medal of Honor for his performance on Guadalcanal.

Eventually Ghormley proved to be gloomy and unenthusiastic, and was replaced by Admiral William F. Halsey, after which the Navy's performance in support of the Marines ashore, and in combating the Japanese Navy, showed marked improvement.

After about two months the Marines were withdrawn and replaced by Army troops, who finished the last half of the campaign. Vandergrift left with his Marines and the new ground commander became Army General Alexander M. "Sandy" Patch. Patch went on to command the US 7th Army in France and Germany in 1944-45, making him one of the few officers to hold high command fighting both the Japanese and the Germans.
For the American marines, it was General Vandegrift, who won the land battle.

The Japanese destroyer force was commanded by rear Admiral Tanaka, who won the battle of Tassafaronga.
