∙ 13y agoAn entire menagerie of carrier pigeons, police & military dogs, police horses and even a ship's cat were awarded the Dickin medal, the only award for gallantry specifically (or primarily) for military working animals.
'The Animal's VC' instituted in 1943 by its namesake and founder of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals Maria Dickin, the award went mainly to pigeons during WW2 but more recent awards have mostly dogs.
This UK award has also been given for exceptional service to foreign animals on occasion - notably to a representative rescue dog and a pair of guide dogs following 9/11.
