MAD- Mutually Assured Destruction with the use of nuclear weapons to wipe out two superpower countries, US and the USSR
would involve the use of newly developed nuclear weapons
Because there was no true defense against nuclear weapons. Once both sides had nuclear weapons, the only way to "protect" themselves from the other side was to have so many more nuclear weapons that even if their enemies used all of their nuclear weapons, there would still be nuclear weapons to shoot back with. That way, nobody would use nuclear weapons, because they could never actually "win" that way. This thought process was referred to as Mutually Assured Destruction, or MAD.
The U.S used no nuclear weapons whatsoever on Vietnam.
yes, it still is
I suspect you mean countries with nuclear weapons. If so they are: Britain France China (PRC) USA Russia India Pakistan North Korea There is strong evidence that Israel has nuclear weapons. Google "The vela incident". There is also suspicion that Ukraine may have inherited some weapons when the USSR Black Sea fleet was marooned in Sevastopol at the breakup of the USSR. Iran is almost certainly working towards nuclear weapons, and if they get them, they will use them.

Most people that know anything about it. Anybody with access to classified documents on it that were only declassified in the last few years (both US and USSR papers). These documents show the USSR had battlefield tactical nuclear weapons already installed and ready, the Soviet soldiers in control of them had orders to use them on invading US forces without needing any additional approval. Had Kennedy chosen to send in troops, as most of his advisors wanted, they would have been wiped out by these weapons, Kennedy would have had no choice but full nuclear strike, then Khrushchev would have had no choice but full nuclear strike back, etc. It was sitting all on this hair trigger and US was unaware of the USSR battlefield tactical nuclear weapons until USSR was removing them after the crisis was over.
No, Nazi Germany had no nuclear weapons.
Because while we were supporting the south, the north were supported by the USSR, who also had nuclear missiles, and we didn't want to start a nuclear holocaust
The word overkill originates from the development of nuclear arsenals mainly by the US and the USSR in the 1960's. This was a time when these nations developed the capacity to destroy, by the use of nuclear weapons, more of the enemy than would be required to achieve victory.
