the United States at first attempted to stay out of WWII because it was part of our policy to not be involved in European wars. We maintained a fairly neutral stance for a while, shipping to both the allies and the axis, but when Germany attacked US merchant ships in 1940, the US only shipped supplies to Britain. The Us finally entered the war in December of 1941, after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
