What was the merit badge in the Revolutionary War?

The "Merit Badge" in the Revolutionary War was a purple cloth in the shape of a heart, with white piping around the outside, with "MERIT" in white stitched in the middle. General George Washington awarded only three of these as a personal award to three Continental Soldiers for the captue of Major Andre, a British spy. It disappeared after the war, but was resurrected in the early 1930's by Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur in it's present form.

What is a bronz star in the military?

a bronz star is a United States Armed Forces individual military decoration that may be awarded for bravery, acts of merit, or meritorious service. As a medal it is awarded for merit, and with the "V" for valor device it is awarded for heroism. It is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Armed Forces and the ninth highest military award (including both combat and non-combat awards) in the order of precedence of U.S. military decorations. Officers from the other federal uniformed services are also eligible to receive the award if they are militarized or detailed to serve with a service branch of the armed forces.[1]

Did Arvin Malcolm Briscoe Jr win a Silver Star award?

Yes, Arvin Malcom Briscoe Jr. did win the Silver Star in the Vietnam War. The papers that awarded him this award, were lost, and were not retrieved until 1996. He was asked to come to Washington D.C. to receive his award. He was so humble he didn't even tell all of his family members; however he did ask my Dad, James Thomas Briscoe, who is also a Vietnam Vet to attend. I wish I could tell the whole story of how he won this award. To the best of my knowledge his team of men were ambushed, and he called in an air strike just feet away from his team. He lost some of his team, but carried the injured and expired onto the rescue helicopter while under heavy fire, and he was the last to board the helicopter, saving many lives.
