The british army/navy had blocked the Germans source of food and material for the war. they took aim at the Americans, at this time they joined and we then had more troops however they didnt have a great deal of training. the Germans didnt use the more advanced tanks, so they were slower whereas we had the usa in favour. the German navy then realised there was nothing worth fighting for as the Germans were starving and began mutiny. then the German leaders decided to opt out... but some don't see it as a defeat more of the END of the war.

Of course nobody outside of the country can really know that, but the most accepted theory, (I don't know if it is most accepted), but it is what I learned at school which is in the Netherlands. The Netherlands were a neutral country at that time. It's just that the Germans felt they were stabbed in the back by their own people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stab-in-the-back_legend

Probably the fact that the Germans thought that they would get back victoriously very fast. Zum Fruhstuck auf nach Pariswas a very popular quote in the German troops, was written on trains ect., and it means something like:" Before breakfast to Paris. "They were clearly underestimating that war, really contributed to the breakdown of their morale.

__

Germany had no real choice but to accept the Armistice.

After the major German pushes before the Americans sent fresh troops to the front lines, the German troops were not only exhausted, they were pushed to the point of collapse and morale was pretty much gone. So many men had died in the trenches, boys and old men were being sent to fill the gaps.

Food production was far too inadequate and shortages at home and in the trenches stretched people to their limits. The blockade on Germany was very successful and shortages extended to food, equipment, goods etc. People were starving and hungry people get radical. Germany was racked by internal turmoil with strikes, battles breaking out on the streets and opposition to the war was spreading rapidly.

Germany was breaking down and the government didn't have many options. The Kaiser abdicated and a cease fire was agreed to.

The inability of the German Army to reach and capture Paris, in the Second Battle of the Marne, was the immediate reason. All of the countries were exhausted by the war and only military victory could prevent domestic revolution. Without the capture of Paris, German victory was not possible and without victory, it was impossible to continue the war.

After the Second Battle of the Marne, the Associated Powers launched a major offensive, which resulted in the desertion of Germany by her wartime allies. Now she stood alone against the combined power of the Americans, British, French, and the Italians.

1. Military defeat: they were in full retreat on the Western Front (and had been retreating since August 1918).**

2. There was muninty on the Home Front. The German government feared a Communist revolution in Germany.

3. The Germans were running out of food.

**Actually, the Germans hadn't lost many battles during the war, except notably and arguably the Battle of Marne. No foreign soldier ever set foot in Germany.

There were constant threats of a Communist takeover, however, this threat didn't have any true power until after the war during the Weimar Republic.

Finally, Germany had always depended on the importation of foodstuffs to keep their citizens feed. Now that they were at war with Great Britain, the British were able to cut off all shipping in and out of Germany. Germany only truly gave up the war because their nation was not ready at the beginning of 1914 to fight a five year war (Remember, all of Europe had come to think war was swift and easy, looking back especially at France's earlier defeat at the hands of Prussia, which was one of the causes of the war in the first place).

Mainly because Germany was losing the war.

They hadn't lost. They were still fighting, and their armies were still controlling territory in northern France. But they were definitely losing- the German Spring Offensive had largely failed, and the Allied Hundred Days Offensive was proceeding well. The German Army was very nearly driven out of France.

Additionally, there was a revolution in Germany itself. What was left of the German Fleet at Kiel was ordered to make an attack against the much larger and more powerful British Fleet, an attack which was seen as suicidal. The sailors mutinied; the mutiny grew and began turning into a full-blown revolution. The Kaiser fled to live with his relatives in the Netherlands, and the German leaders who remained surrendered to the Allies.

The Armistice of Compiègne was signed out of fear of German revolution. Mutiny had already occurred Wilhelmshaven and began the spread of unrest through the entire country.
