Nazi airmen had to fly greater distances (round trip), and were heavily laden with fuel and ordnance, and had to CONCENTRATE on their targets. Therefore German airmen were more tired, especially when conducting multiple missions (steady missions without rest). British airmen on the other hand simply had to fly straight up above their home turf and start shooting. They didn't have to go far to find enemy planes : the air above Great Britain was a "target rich environment" of German airplanes. The British pilot could also simply land to re-fuel and re-arm. A "fresh" pilot will kill a "tired" one almost every time.

Of course, this was offset by the numerical advantage of the Germans, and the number of targets simultaneously attacked. The defense required both skilled pilots and skillful allocation of resources to counter a multitude of possible attacks. Fortunately the pilots and aircraft of the British were up to the task. Also, the Germans could not employ their missiles (V-1, V-2) until very late in the war - combined with the bomber assaults, they might have overwhelmed the air defenses.
