When the civil war started there were 4 million slaves in the south. As northern troops came through the southern states the slaves would seek them out and follow the troops. They were called "contraband" because under military law anything (or person in the slaves case) the military unit that has the contraband doesn't have to be returned. Slaves were fighting and wanted to fight. Many slaves had backgrounds as military commanders before slavery. The African American units in the war were brave and many died under the union flags.
