When more and more people came to work in the factories there was a need for the cities to expand. This expansion caused the need for more roads and more living areas in the form of suburbs.
The auto manufacturers such as Ford, Chrysler and General Motors converted their factories in Detroit for making weapons, engines, planes. They lacked enough manpower so thousands came from the south to fill the need for workers.
It was not only US manpower, but US womenpower that helped turn the tide of war. Men went overseas to fight. Others stayed behind and worked on farms or in war factories. To fill the need for workers, women entered the workforce in large numbers. American production of war goods was able to outproduce the other nations, turning the tide in the Allies favor.
During those times, the South focused more on agriculture, farming, growing crops (cotton, tobacco, indigo, and rice), and found no need for factories. To them, slaves and land were what they should be their priority.

It was during the changeover to an Industrial economy. The population boomed, and many children were starving. And the new factories needed cheap labor. The children could work there, or die. They - and their parents - predominantly chose for them to work there. As the economy grew, the need to have the children as income earner decreased, and the capital accumulation of the factories allowed them to afford the more costly adult workers.

Industrialization made it possible to produce more goods faster. Thus in world or times when growth drew crowds to industrialized areas providing more workers and the demand for them. Industry brought people to cities and out of the woods and farmland thus creating a need for more manufacturing.
