WWI was supposed to be "the war to end all wars". It wasn't. WW2 seemed like just another European war at first. The USA was suffering from the Great Depression (1929 to 1940) and we couldn't afford to get involved in other nations problems. There were a lot of isolationists and peace lovers in the USA (until Dec. 7, 1941-Pearl Harbor), who wanted the USA to stay out of other countries wars. There were Americans who thought Germany couldn't be beaten (until after the Battle of Stalingrad). There were also Americans who thought the Atlantic and Pacific oceans would keep the USA safe from other nation's wars.
