There were many reasons why the Northerners recruited the American Americans into the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. These individuals helped to strengthen the troops when others refused to fight for the country. Former slaves were use to working hard and in harsh conditions. This gave the northern troops an advantage over the south that refused to allow these former slaves to serve during battle.
