During the 1950s, the United States military constructed bases throughout the continental U.S.A., as well as around the world, as part of its increasing engagement in the 'Cold War' with the Soviet Union. Primarily for early-warning defense, other communication, but also offensive purposes, these bases were just one element in an increasingly sophisticated effort by the American military to maintain an advantage against its super-power opponent.
