Commander of 4th Army, and nominal commander of the attack Lt-General Rawlinson wished his men to arrive at their objectives at roughly the same time, SUGGESTING an even and steady pace. This was not an order, merely a suggestion and in the field local commanders were allowed to decide for themselves. However, many battalion and brigade level officers ordered their men to advance at a walk due to Rawlinson's wishes, whilst others snuck forward during the preliminary bombardment and others still charged at the run.

Another consideration would have been weight of equipment. After being issued their own personal kit such as weapon, ammo, small pack with rations, gas-hood etc, the soldiers also had to carry extra tools, additional ammunition for platoon machineguns, rifle grenades and the like. So, advancing over broken ground with 33kg of gear would not have been easy at a running pace, no matter how deadly the situation, and this may have impacted officer's decisions.
