Tactics, comrades, tactics! The Germans had expected to beat back the French on the western front before Russia had mobilized its troops, seeing as the Reds didn't have railroad systems. This would have prevented a war on two fronts, which is very preferable. The French and German armies were nearly evenly matched, gaining small amounts of land at a time in the trenches of No-Man's land. Then the British stepped in, and by the time Germany had figured out they really weren't going anywhere the Russians had made it to the Eastern front. The American forces joined in, and Germany's quick and easy route to victory was destroyed before their very eyes.
