As well as the Allied Air Forces, who ran a massive (but short) carpet bombing campaign in the hours before the initial landing, but cloud cover obscured this and many, if not all, of the bombers missed their primary targets. Batteries such as that on Point Du Hoc were heavily bombarded, as you can still see today if you visit the ruins.
