Not just the South Carolinians, most southern states. It's because the war was between the north and the south. Carpetbaggers are northeners who moved south after the war and became active in the souths' goverment, politics, etc. The south really just didnt like that they were north people taking part in their lives.

Because those people came south to make money off the misery off the defeated and embattled southern people, who had lost nearly everything in the war. They were often put in positions of local power, to make life harder for the defeated south.
