Gadaffi was forced from office by the concerted efforts of the US and France mainly, in the somewhat naive expectation that this would somehow lead to peace and democracy. After being ousted, Gadaffi tried to flee to a neighboring country, but his convoy was stopped by a rival clan and Gadaffi was murdered on the spot.

His death did not lead to any peace. The various rivaling clans and tribes went at each others throats over the country's oil riches (and remain so more or less to this day) and Lybia is now generally considered to be a 'failed State'.
