The original USS Enterprise (the first of 8 US sea vessels), was a wooden Sloop (a single masted vessel) named HMS George, and was captured by an American Army officer named Benedict Arnold in 1775. He and his small party of men captured an enemy fort, along with a small wooden ship or two, the "George" included. The engagement had been near bloodless, and with "George" being the name of King George (the current enemy at the time), Arnold renamed the wooden ship, the ENTERPRISE.
Although not stated, he probably named it so for the "enterprising manner in which his men showed initiative, ingenuity, and energy (all of which define an enterprise) in obtaining their victory" over the English that day.
WWII Enterprise was about 824 feet long. She was the only one of three of her class to survive the war.
The first ship to be named 'Enterprise' was the French ship L'Entreprise. It was captured by the British Royal Navy in 1705 and renamed as HMS Enterprise.
Until more could be built, the US only had the carriers USS Saratoga, USS Enterprise, USS Hornet, and the USS Wasp left in the Pacific...USS Ranger was to remain in the Atlantic as she was considered an "easy target" in the Pacific. Lexington and Yorktown (and Langley) were gone. Hornet and Wasp would be lost shortly.
The ships were the heavy cruiser USS Tuscaloosa (CA-37) and the light cruisers USS Birmingham (CL-62) and USS Mobile (CL-63).
Probably the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise; the only survivor out of the three sisters, USS Yorktown (sunk at the Battle of Midway), USS Hornet (sunk at the Battle of Santa Cruz). Much to the heartbreak of most US Sailors of WW2, she was scrapped (re-cycled) in 1959.

Nimitz class carriers were built later. Although the Nimitz class carriers are loosely based on the USS Enterprise, the USS Enterprise is not in the Nimitz class and is quite different. So, no. The USS Enterprise is not a Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier.
